Why Nobody Cares About Experience in Business

Experience can be described as that practical knowledge gained by taking part in an activity and sometimes by observation. In today’s corporate world, some years of work experience comes in very handy in helping one land a dream job. The idea of hiring experienced staff is very beneficial to the employer. This simply means little orientation time, avoidable losses due to naivety, new skills to the job and so much more advantages to the employer. But what does experience really mean to a new graduate, an inexperienced job seeker, or any novice out there? To these people, experience may mean a hindrance to achieve their dreams or simply a nightmare.

When starting a business, things may be similar but also a little different. Experience in that particular field may be very helpful in seeing things from a certain perspective but it is not completely necessary. If you have been keen enough to talk to some small business owners you will find out that most of them didn’t have ALL the knowledge about their startups before they began. In fact, many entrepreneurs will tell you that regardless of their previous knowledge, starting out may sometimes feel like groping in the darkness. Scary, right? This is what is called risk-taking or taking a leap of faith.

If experience doesn’t really matter 100% in business, what then really does?

· Research

Since you are new to the market and lack experience, the best you can do is carry out some research. Try to understand your products/services and your sector very well. Let say for instance you plan on starting a real estate agency business in Nairobi. Take your time to learn as much as you can about the properties in Nairobi. If your niche is commercial property, then watch the YouTube channels of the giants in that market, visit sites (literally or even virtually), make sure to learn about construction laws in Kenya, the hot-selling locations, etc.

· Understand The Trends

Take your time to learn of the new trends in your field. Let’s say in the fashion industry there are these social media influencers who really influence others what fashion trends will likely pick during the season. So as a new designer you can make designs based on that for easier marketing and sales. Then you may have to pick a niche that rarely gets off the market like business suits or African Ankara fusions. This way your designs may always be trending.

· Plan Ahead

As you create your business plan make sure it aligns with everything in your life. Your time, family, and even simple things like your morals or principles. If you start a business that has an area that stresses you out, then you are likely to run into problems later on regardless of how successful it may be. If for example, your business will involve lots of traveling without family then be sure to prepare them early enough. So it is important that you truly know what you will be doing in detail as this may determine your success.

· Passion and Consistency

I rarely fail to mention the importance of these two in my blogs and posts. This just shows how important they are in any given business. Loving what you do is paramount in making it successful. There are those mornings you may lack the energy to get up and keep your business going. However, if you are passionate about your business, then the energy will just come since you can’t bear to see it go down regardless of the challenges you may be facing. Consistency means showing up, opening early, closing late, posting daily, setting appointments, etc. regardless of any negativity.

From the above, we can see that as much as experience is important it is not really a must-have aspect when you start your small business. It is just an added advantage but if you do the above and any other thing you can think of as a business owner then you will definitely succeed.
